Stephanie Chou's compositions combine classical and Chinese music with jazz harmonies,
and feature her warm alto saxophone sound. Growing up in Irvington, New York, Chou studied mathematics at Columbia University. She just released her first full-length jazz album, Prime Knot, which features Marcus Printup (Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra) on trumpet. The release concert will be held at Drom NYC on April 29, 2011.

In April 2009, Chou led her quintet in a performance of original compositions at Carnegie Hall. She has performed throughout New York City at venues including B.B. King's, Miller Theater, Shea Stadium, The Knitting Factory, and in the atrium at Jazz at Lincoln Center, as well as in Italy, New Orleans, and Chicago. She has shared the stage with jazz greats Steve Wilson, Bobby Watson, and Paul Bollenback. During the summer of 2007, Chou extensively explored the developing Beijing, China jazz scene and performed with local musicians.

In 2008 and 2009, Chou was awarded Columbia's Rapaport Prize for Music. She was a finalist for a Fulbright Scholarship in 2010-2011, the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund for Musicians in 2009, and the Henry Evans Travel Fellowship at Columbia in 2009. In the fall of 2008, she researched geometric chord theory in the applied math department at Columbia University. She also studied at Berklee College of Music’s Summer Performance Program. Currently, Steph studies composition and saxophone with Patrick Zimmerli. She has also studied with Ole Mathisen, Steve Wilson, Don Sickler, and Ben Waltzer. Steph continues to live and perform around New York City.
